Uptown Revitalization Strategy

During its heyday, the historic U Street Corridor encompassed a wide range of theaters and jazz clubs. Two historic theaters remain today: the Lincoln Theater, now renovated as a multi-purpose venue for live performances, and the Howard Theater, which is undergoing restoration.

BAE led a multi-disciplinary team to plan for redevelopment of the Corridor, recapturing the area's history as an entertainment destination for the City and the region. The Plan includes redevelopment of several District-owned properties including the Howard Theater for entertainment, restaurant, retail, office, and residential uses. BAE formulated detailed market and financial analyses to guide the Plan and a subsequent solicitation for private developer proposals. The focus of this process was to prepare a step-by-step action plan to help the community achieve its long-held vision for the Uptown Destination District.
